Welcome to Rowan Tree House

A safe, nurturing, creative space where children, young people, and women are supported through creative therapies and workshops to explore their inner world, build their sense of self, and feel more at home in themselves.

I offer one-on-one therapeutic sessions for children and teens grounded in social work and informed by creative therapy practices.

Sessions are tailored to each individual, using creativity as a safe and meaningful way to express and explore what can’t always be put into words.

I also offer parent support sessions, providing guidance, strategies, and a space to reflect on how best to support your child’s emotional wellbeing and growth.

Rowan Tree House offers wellness workshops for women, providing a supportive and creative space for connection and reflection.

Centrally located on Jane Street in the heart of Brisbane’s West End.

About me

Hello! My name is Timothea Thompson (Timi)

I am a qualified Social Worker with over 20 years of experience supporting children and young people across a range of settings, including child protection, primary school wellbeing, and high school learning enrichment.

I hold a Graduate Certificate in Art Therapy and Play Therapy, which I thoughtfully integrate into my work with children and young people. I have a special interest in supporting neurodivergent children and young people.

My approach is strengths-based and person-centred, with a focus on building trust, safety and connection. I specialise in creative therapies and therapeutic story writing, supporting children to express themselves, make sense of their experiences and build confidence in who they are.

Art Therapy

Art Therapy is an evidence based practice providing a safe and creative outlet for children, young people, and adults to work through challenges, process emotions, build confidence and resilience, relieve stress and gain new perspectives.

It can be especially useful in allowing subconscious thoughts and emotions to arise in a safe and supported space for exploration and healing.

Art skills are not necessary, as the focus is on creative process, not final product.

One on one sessions are tailored to the individual and may include various modalities for creative expression, such as water colour painting, drawing, nature based art, clay, collage, music, therapeutic story writing or story telling, play, sandtray work, and drama.

  • Confidence

The Power of Therapeutic Stories

I specialise in therapeutic story writing and support children and young people in writing their own therapeutic stories.

Therapeutic storytelling is a powerful yet gentle approach that uses metaphor to support emotional understanding, shift behaviour, gain perspective, and navigate challenges such as anxiety, low confidence, or big feelings. By externalising experiences into story form, children can explore difficult themes with a sense of distance and safety.

Because metaphor is processed differently to direct language, stories often resonate more deeply, allowing insights to emerge naturally and meaning to land in a way that feels accessible and lasting.

In sessions, this may involve creating characters, drawing scenes, building narratives or co-writing stories together. Each process is tailored to the individual, meeting them where they are and working at their pace.

The Rowan Tree represents resilience, strength and renewal

The rowan tree features in many myths and legends and holds strong symbolism that resonates with the process of art therapy. The rowan tree symbolises strength, resilience, renewal, balance, courage, connection, wisdom and protection.

Known as the Celtic Tree of LIfe, the Traveler’s Tree or Wayfarer’s Tree, it’s believed to help those who feel lost on their journey to find their way. It’s said to represent a reunion of self and soul through making peace with our shadows, as they are a source of wisdom, compassion, and strength.
